Irmak Sirer.

Bohemian, Secret Agent, Data Scientist.

Irmak is a Design Director of the Data Science Discipline at IDEO. He strives to combine the perspective and tools of data science with human-centered design thinking to create solutions involving data and technology. Irmak believes in and embraces the subjectivity of data, as well as any process that utilizes data. In his mind, data science is a creative discipline, and data is a medium for design.

Before it joined forces with IDEO in 2017, Irmak was a partner at Datascope, a data science consulting company, where he has helped companies across industries solve problems with data, from small companies to many members of the Fortune 100.

He also conducted and published academic research on a wide range of topics, including student choices in public schools, web browsing behavior of masses, global airline networks, species conservation in ecology, language topic models, and optimizing DNA sequences for high gene expression among others.

When Metis partnered with Datascope for creating a data science bootcamp, Irmak designed the course with Laurie Skelly and other Datascopers and taught the first two cohorts.

Technically, Irmak has BS and MS degrees in Material Science from Sabanci University, an MS and a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Northwestern University, and an Art History minor from Sabanci University. Practically, he believes in merging knowledge from different disciplines to help figure out the right questions. Perhaps even more than that, he believes in movies, bourbon, and Neutral Milk Hotel.
