You find a table, take a sip of your coffee and open the novel to where you left off. A one-armed Frenchwoman offers Marlowe a missing person case. He is intrigued. The café’s cat brushes by your leg. You absentmindedly reach out with one hand and give her head a quick scratch, without taking your eyes off the book. Marlowe needs a drink, he needs a lot of life insurance, he needs a vacation, he needs a home in the country. What he has is a coat, a hat and a gun. He puts them on and goes out of the room.
